Costa Rica Defeats Brazil in Panamerican Championship Opener

1960 Tournament Kicked Off with Thrilling Match

San José, Costa Rica – The 1960 Panamerican Championship got off to a thrilling start as host nation Costa Rica upset heavily favored Brazil in the opening match.

Playing in front of a raucous home crowd, Costa Rica took an early lead through a goal from goalkeeper Rodolfo Herrera. Brazil fought back and equalized through Garrincha, but Costa Rica regained the lead just before halftime through a goal from Mario Cordero.

In the second half, Costa Rica held on for the 2-1 victory, stunning the Brazilian team and sending shockwaves through the tournament. The victory was a major upset, as Brazil was heavily favored to win the championship.

Costa Rica now leads the tournament standings with three points, while Brazil is in second place with one point. The two teams will meet again in the final match of the tournament on June 12.
